Gibbes Museum of Art, 135 Meeting Street, Charleston. Main Gallery, Dec. 19 - Mar. 29, 2009 - "Painters of American Life: The Eight.". In 1908, eight American artists organized an exhibition at Macbeth Galleries in New York that became the talk of the town. Arthur B. Davies, William Glackens, Robert Henri, Ernest Lawson, George Luks, Maurice Prendergast, Everett Shinn, and John Sloan openly challenged the National Academy of Design, which they considered out of step with progressive American art, and organized their own group exhibition. In 2008, Cheekwood Botanical Garden & Museum of Art of Nashville, TN, organized this centennial exhibition that celebrates the many-faceted careers of the eight artists. Rotunda Galleries, Dec. 19 - Mar. 29, 2009 - "The American Scene on Paper: Prints and Drawings from the Schoen Collection". Organized by the Georgia Museum of Art in Athens, this exhibition presents art that reflects the vast political, social and economic changes that occurred during the Great Depression and World War II. With images ranging from portrayals of the plight of the farm laborer to depictions of industry and the growing urban environment, the exhibit focuses on this important period in American art that has not had the attention it is due. Gallery A, Through Apr. 26, 2009 - "Printmaking". Drawn from the Gibbes permanent collection, the exhibit will explore various printmaking processes from the nineteenth century through the present. First Floor, Ongoing - "The Charleston Story". With over 10,000 objects, the permanent collection housed at the Gibbes Museum of Art presents a rich, vibrant history of the Lowcountry. This exhibition highlights significant people, places, and periods from Charlestonís beginning as a British colony, through the American Revolution, the later ravages of the Civil War, and culminating today as a culturally diverse and dynamic community. Explore Gallery, Ongoing - "The Charleston Renaissance: An Artistic Reawakening". Fifty years after the Civil War ended, artists such as Alice Ravenel Huger Smith, Elizabeth OíNeill Verner, Anna Heyward Taylor, and Alfred Hutty created artwork that kindled a new appreciation among Charlestonís citizens for the cityís physical environment and lowcountry character. The Charleston Museum, 360 Meeting Street, Charleston. Founded
in 1773, is America's first museum. Through Feb. 28, 2009 - "From
Slave to Sharecropper: African Americans in the Lowcountry after
the Civil War," presents an original exhibition to commemorate
the bicentennial of the abolition of the international slave trade
in the United States and the British Empire. The exhibit will
be centered around the recollections and memories of Lowcountry
descendants of slaves and sharecroppers. It will include artifacts
and images of African American experiences in the Lowcountry after
the Civil War from the Museum's collection. Ongoing - Featuring

Columbia Museum of Art, Main & Hampton Streets, Columbia. Lipscomb Family Galleries, Dec. 19 - May 10, 2009 - "Eye to the East: The Turner Collection of Chinese Art". The donation to the Columbia Museum of Art of this collection is significant in that it now gives breadth and context to a strong and growing collection of Korean, Japanese and Chinese art. This constitutes the only public collection of Asian art created for the Asian market in South Carolina. The exhibition offers visitors a more in-depth understanding of Chinese art and a more complete study of the outstanding gifts of Asian art from Dr. Turner, who has donated more than 100 works to the Museum from ancient Roman heads to works by 20th century Modern masters. BB&T Focus Gallery, Ongoing - "Southern Traditions," will showcase the richness and diversity of the Museum's collection of furniture, ceramics, silver, basketry, sculpture and paintings by artists native to, or active in, South Carolina and its surrounding states. Among the works on view will be fine silver made by Charleston and Columbia silversmiths; a sweet grass basket by Mary Jackson (SC, born 1945); wood carvings by Edgar Alexander McKillop (NC, 1879-1950); and paintings by Charles Fraser (SC, 1782-1860), Xanthus Russell Smith (SC, 1839-1929), William Harrison Scarborough (SC, 1812-1871), William Aiken Walker (SC, 1838-1921), among others. Ray Taylor Fair Gallery, Ongoing - Featuring a new and permanent installation of its ancient art collection. The installation includes approximately 50 objects that introduce the major ancient civilizations from the Mediterranean and Near East. Examples of the earliest form of writing from 12th century B.C. Mesopotamia, are shown next to Egyptian scarabs and Greek painted vessels. The world of the ancient Romans is represented by 2nd century glass and bronze items and portrait sculpture. Many of these works have not been seen since the Museum moved to its location on Main Street in 1998. The collection has grown over the last several years with the donation of 12 fine Roman sculptures in 2002 from Pennsylvania collector Dr. Robert Y. Turner. Through Jan. 4, 2009 - "The South Carolina State Museum: 20 Years of Treasures," featuring a special exhibit dedicated to objects that it has collected over the past two decades. Lipscomb Gallery, Through Jan. 4, 2009 - "Leonardo da Vinci: Machines in Motion," will bring from Florence, Italy the world's largest exhibition of full-size machine replicas, constructed according to Leonardo da Vinci's manuscripts, which were collectively called the "codices." The unique, 7,000-square-foot exhibit features 40 working machines, a number of them life-sized, built by a team of expert historians and engineers who have studied da Vinci's codices. Organized by the National Center for Children's Illustrated Literature, this exhibition will feature activities that empower parents and children to engage in a fascinating journey of art and science. Although stylistically very different, Wyeth and Johns have many things in common; both are precocious, prolific, proficient, and profound. Charlestonian Gary Grier paints scenes from urban life that are rich in color and attentive to detail. This exhibition features lowcountry street scenes peopled by characters who are at once familiar and iconic. Through Jan. 4, 2009 - "Bruce Davidson: Time of Change - Photographs from the Civil Rights Movement". Forty-five years after Martin Luther King gave voice to his dream for equality, a collection of photographs from the Civil Rights movement revives a time that changed both North and South. Through Feb. 22, 2009 - "E. Ambrose Webster: Pioneer Modernist". Webster embraced a vibrant, modernist style characterized by a brilliant palette and broken brushwork. Sumter
Sumter County Gallery of Art, Sumter County Cultural Center, 135 Haynesworth St., Sumter. Through Dec. 31 - "Sarah Hobbs: Modern Angst". Working in conjunction with Solomon Projects, Atlanta GA, the Sumter County Gallery of Art is proud to present a major solo exhibition by Sarah Hobbs, a photographic artist based in Atlanta. The exhibition in Sumter comprises 13 works including two new works of art. Hobbs holds a BA in Art History and a MFA in Photography from the University of Georgia. Through Dec. 31 - "Loren Schwerd: Mourning Portrait". Schwerd is a sculptor and mixed media artist who is currently an Assistant Professor of Sculpture at Louisiana State University. Mourning Portrait is a series of memorials to the communities of New Orleans that were devastated by the flooding which followed Hurricane Katrina. SC Artisans Center, 334 Wichman Street, 2 miles off I95, exits 53 or 57, Walterboro. Ongoing - Featuring work of nearly 280 of the SC's leading artists. The Center offers educational and interpretive displays of Southern folklife. Its mission is to enhance the appreciation and understanding of the rich cultural heritage of South Carolina. Also - "Handmade: A Celebration of the Elements of Craft". Artists and craftsmen from all over the state will sit on the porch of the center creating their artwork.
